Dallas Retirement Village Nursing Assistant Training Program
Dallas Retirement Village offers a free training program where caregivers can learn how to be quality nursing assistants and prepare for the Oregon State Board of Nursing certification test. With close to 60 years of combined experience in the healthcare field, the instructor and teaching assistant share a love of caring for our senior population.
The Nursing Assistant Course accepts 12 students per cohort. There are approximately 10 classes per year and consist of classroom learning, lab practice of skills, and a clinical experience of hands-on care for long term care residents.
Fees
The course is free. Dallas Retirement Village believes in social accountability and supports those who wish to expand their education and expertise in the healthcare industry – especially those who enjoy working with the senior population. Students who wish to achieve an Oregon State Board of Nursing certification will be required to submit an application for the certification test and fingerprinting. The application testing fee is $106 and fingerprinting costs are approximately $70.00. These fees are paid for by Dallas Retirement Village if the student has accepted a position at Dallas Retirement Village, otherwise these fees are the responsibility of the student.
Materials
Textbook and workbook are provided by Dallas Retirement Village.
Program Process

- Applications are available on the website during specific periods throughout the year prior to each class and must be filled out completely.
- All applicants’ names are then placed in a lottery and 20 are chosen to interview.
- During the interview, candidates are expected to bring 2 letters of recommendation to be in the class.
- 12 candidates are then selected to be in the class along with 2 alternates.

Program Eligibility and Requirements
Students who have been formally accepted into the Nursing Assistant Program must attend a mandatory orientation where program policies will be reviewed. Class requirements include:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Criminal background check (at interview if you are accepted into the class).
- Covid vaccine information (vaccine is not required for the class)
- Possess the physical and cognitive capacity, emotional stability, and communication skills essential for the delivery of safe, effective nursing care.
- Basic math skills
- Able to perform the skills required to be a caregiver
- Able to lift or push up to 35 pounds.
- Speak, read and write English
- Basic computer skills – (the text is in an e-book)
- Scrubs and non-skid shoes
- The last requirement is a desire to care for others with kindness, empathy, and understanding.
